In 1986, intense interest was created by the project entitled Salute to Liberty. Rudy Hajnal took part in this project and based on designs by Endre Szász created and released a limited series (twenty) of historical panels. The images depict symbolized segments of the History of America portraying the settlers, the war for independence, the Civil War, the industrial revolution, World War II and the moon walk.

These copper panels were rough formed by molds and then each piece was hand hammered to create details. They are formed from a single sheet of copper and finished with natural copper oxides and individually hand polished and lacquered. Each panel measuring 2 ft. by 2 ft is a part of a complete set of six. And each of these reliefs are identified with the artists hand signed initials and number designation.

One set of the historical wall-reliefs can be seen in Budapest at the Embassy of the United States. In 1989, at the dedication, ambassador Mark Palmer said that this artwork also serves the good relationship between Hungary and the United States.

The American Hungarian Museum of Passaic, the proud owner of set AP/20, is deeply grateful to Katalin Ladunga Halász and István Ladunga, who donated this beautiful and valuable mural artwork History of America, to the museum in 2001.

THE SETTLERS
The Mayflower and the first immigrants. Barren trees for hard times… and yet the sun shines down. The first Thanksgiving, the peace pipe, and the Indians tomahawk… also a part of American history.
INDEPENDENCE WAR
The Liberty Bell and the War of Independence. The torch of the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of victory, and a star of each for the first colonies.
THE CIVIL WAR
The victory over slavery, and the broken chains of the Blacks. Fruits symbolize the fruitfulness of the country to come.
INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
The birth of industry, commerce and transportation. The Stock Market Building, Edison’s first light bulb and the sun shining down symbolizing the success of the country and it’s people.
WORLD WAR II.
The beasts of war. The Arizona Monument rising from a boiling sea. The flaming sword, symbolic of our country’s willingness to fight… held in the left hand to show our reluctance to be the initiator of war. The “V” for victory, made into a peace sign by the sword imposed over it.
MOON WALK
The flowering of technology, and exploration of space. An almost medieval “man on the moon” reminds us of the universality of man. The sun as the source of life and symbol of optimism in what lies ahead.
